Conversation cards 2025
Questions that help open conversations about family, relationships, identity and the things that often go unsaid at home.

Why the project started
In Vietnamese families and in the community we sometimes want to talk about important things but do not know how to start. We lack the right words, fear being misunderstood or feel that some topics never have a good moment. So we made conversation cards that help a conversation begin gently, without pressure and without one correct answer.
Who the project is for
For families, partners, friends and community groups. For anyone who wants to know others better, open a deeper conversation or name things that are sometimes hard to say out loud.

How the project ran
Together with participants we drafted and tested different sets of questions. We looked at whether they were clear in Czech and in Vietnamese, how they were used in conversation and which topics needed more careful wording.
Based on the feedback we adjusted the questions and added the option to skip any question at any time.
Challenges
The hardest part was writing questions that go deep without creating pressure to share. We also had to find wording that works in Czech and Vietnamese alike and does not assume that every family or person has the same experience.
Impact
The project created a safe space for more open conversations about topics that are often hard to raise in families – from childhood and upbringing through relationships and identity to mental wellbeing.
Testing together produced questions that help people know themselves and those close to them better, share their own experiences and open an intergenerational dialogue.
The cards also do not end with a single meeting – they can serve as a simple tool for conversation at home, among friends and in the community.
Learning
- A well-placed question can open a conversation, but it should never oblige anyone to answer.
- One experience cannot speak for a whole community.
- The same sentence can land differently in Czech and in Vietnamese.
- A safer conversation needs the option to decline, skip or return to a topic later.
