Between two worlds

Family, expectations and mental health

Upcoming

“Our parents sacrificed everything for us. So why do we sometimes feel they don’t understand us?”

They want security. We are looking for freedom.

They talk about success. We talk about happiness.

They worry about our future. We worry we won’t get to live our own lives.

A TAMly talk at NVIET Options 2026, organised by NVIEC. Together we will talk openly about family, expectations and mental health – topics that often go unspoken in our families.

What to expect

NVIET Options 2026

NVIET Options is an event about opportunities, inspiration and personal growth for the young Vietnamese generation in Czechia. It creates space for sharing experiences, gaining new perspectives, open discussion and connecting people who are finding their own path between two cultures. The aim is to show young people a range of life options, support them in their decisions and encourage them not to be afraid to follow their own path.

What we will open up with TAMly

At this joint session with the TAMly project, we will open up topics that often go unspoken in our families. We will talk about what it is like to grow up between two cultures, why conflicts between generations arise and how our upbringing and family relationships affect mental health.

What will we talk about?

  • Two generations, two worlds. Why do parents and children sometimes see success, security and happiness so differently?
  • Love or pressure? When can parental care and good intentions turn into expectations that weigh us down?
  • Why don’t we understand each other? How do cultural differences, the language barrier and different life experiences shape our relationships?
  • How can we talk to each other better? How can we express our needs and set boundaries while still respecting our parents?
  • Mental health is not taboo. What does it mean to look after your mental health, when should you seek help and why is therapy not a sign of weakness?
